Light Tape® Illuminates Nunnington Hall Stairs for Exit in Emergency

Lying in the valley of the river Rye in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, Nunnington Hall country house, a Grade I listed building, is owned, conserved and managed as a visitor attraction by the National Trust.

Nunnington hall is open to the general public and contains four flights of poorly illuminated stairs to the rear of the building, when the question of safety was raised an imaginative solution had to be sought. Being a grade l listed building any proposed slight change to any part of the structure proves virtually impossible to get approved. However health and safety regulations make it clear that adequate safety lighting provision should be afforded to staircases etc, so creating a dilemma as to how the regulations should be adhered to and implemented sympathetically.

It was decided that banisters and safety lighting using Light Tape® should be incorporated in to the stairways to satisfy modern day safety requirements. Of course the resulting solution had to be in keeping with the period setting while also providing the specific requirements of health and safety regulations.

Rustic wooden banister rails were crafted to provide the necessary assistance and stability when ascending and descending the stairs. Metal brackets were fashioned to look like the kind that would have been made at a blacksmiths forge in keeping with the technology of earlier times. However, when the safety, egress lighting was discussed it was felt that this should be unobtrusive and visible only when in use.

Light Tape® was considered to be the best solution for this specific requirement. Due to the product being so thin in nature, less than 1mm thick, and available in any length up to 100m, with both low power and low maintenance, Light Tape® offered a singularly unique solution that proved easy to incorporate in to the underside of the wooden banisters satisfying all the requirements and more.

A shallow channel was routed along the centre of the underside of the wooden banister, deep enough for a length of Light Tape® with an electrical connector fitted at one end to lay. Supplied cut to length, sealed and connected ready for use, the Light Tape® and connector was fixed into place using a 3M double sided adhesive tape. The metal brackets were then also fixed on to the underside of the banister to either side of the routed channel containing the Light Tape®, at intervals along its length. This done the banister including the Light Tape® was fitted to the walls either side of the stairs. A single wire was then able to be discretely routed to a battery backup power unit so in an emergency the egress lighting on the banisters would come on should the main electrical supply be interrupted.

Light Tape®  uses less than one twentieth of the power and is half the price of Neon and Cold Cathode display lighting, it is flexible, easier to install and maintain, reduces light pollution, produces no waste heat or infrared light, is fully recyclable, uses No Gas, No Glass and No Mercury and, does not effect night vision.

The work at Nunnington Hall was contracted by: National Trust, York and installed by: Lister Electrical, York.

The first Nunnington Hall was mentioned in the thirteenth century and the site has had many different owners. The oldest parts of the surviving house, which now form part of the west front was built in the sixteenth century by William Parr. The present building is a combination of seventeenth and eighteenth century work, though most of Nunnington Hall seen today was created during the 1680s by Richard Graham, 1st Viscount Preston, its then owner.

Nunnington Hall is a popular visitor’s attraction featuring sheltered walled garden, with spring-flowering organic meadows, orchards and flamboyant peacocks, art and photography exhibitions during the year and the amazing Carlisle Collection of miniature rooms.

The DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) has recently been updated to provide extra protection to the Partially Sighted, putting emphasis on both the illumination of Stairs and making columns and pillars in public areas more visually apparent. Light Tape can assist in both these areas with cost effective simple solutions.
