General Photo Techniques

You Will Need

  • A blower brush or ear syringe
  • A camel hair lens brush
  • A lens cloth or tissue
  • Lens cleaner

Step 1: Brush first

Use a blower brush to remove dust and dirt. If you don’t have a blower brush, use an ear syringe. Next, brush the lens with a camel hair lens brush.

Step 2: Wipe second

Breathe on the lens; then wipe off smudges with a lens cloth or lens tissue. If that doesn’t work, put a drop of lens cleaner on the cloth and try again. Wipe gently in a circular motion, working outward from the center.

A microfiber lens cloth can be hand washed without detergent and reused. A lens tissue can be used only once.

Step 3: Clean other parts

Clean the rear lens element, as well as filters and lens caps to avoid transferring dust to the lens.

Do not use rubbing alcohol or eyeglass tissues to clean a lens. Each contains added chemicals that can damage or leave a coating on the lens.

Step 4: Keep it clean

Clean your lenses as seldom as possible. Every time you clean a lens you risk scratching it or damaging its coating. Always store your camera in a case with the lens cap on.

$19.99

Arguing that photography should be about more than gear, shooting modes, and computer programs, this book highlights methods for creating artistic photographs in the moment a picture is taken, rather than later in the editing process. In stark contrast to the ?fix everything in post production approach dominating modern digital photography, this reference demonstrates a more purposeful approach to shooting each frame?carefully considering the subject’s focus and determining the best camera settings, lighting, lens choice, and composition to achieve that objective. Beginning with basic controls that can have a profound effect on your images, such as shutter speed and aperture, it goes on to explore how these settings, along with white balance adjustment, can be used to draw out the artistic value inherent in a scene or subject. In addition, a section on selectively and intentionally adding blur effects explains how to create wild effects that cannot be achieved otherwise. Rather than relying on a computer to ?fix images, Painting with a Lens provides the tools essential to becoming an artist with a camera.

Through the Lens of the City: NEA Photography Surveys of the 1970s

Through the Lens of the City: NEA Photography Surveys of the 1970s

$42.99

During the 1970s, the National Endowment for the Arts Photography Surveys granted money to photograph American cities at the bicentennial and years that followed. In "Through the Lens of the City: NEA Photography Surveys of the 1970s," Mark Rice brings to light this long-neglected photographic endeavor. From 1976 to 1981, the NEA supported more than seventy projects that examined a wide range of people and places in America. Artists involved included such well known photographers as Bruce Davidson, Lee Friedlander, and Joel Meyerowitz and many photographers who became widely known after their work with the surveys, such as Robert Adams, Joe Deal, Terry Evans, and Wendy Ewald. Rice argues that the NEA Photographic Surveys drew from two wells: a widespread sense of nostalgia and an intense public interest in photography. Looking at the works from eight key cities-Atlanta, Buffalo, Durham, East Baltimore, Galveston, Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Venice-the book uncovers marked differences as well as startling similarities in the concerns manifested by different photographers in far-flung places. Although the surveys are interesting both for their artistic merits and for their place in the history of American photography, they are equally important as a documentation of bicentennial-era America and a close examination of American cities. A major shift in the ideals of civil engineering and urban planning was underway in the 1970s. At the same time, ideas and theories about photography were changing along with our notions of what the city could and should be. These surveys, capturing American cities in a fascinating period of flux, show us American photographers matching artistry to subject matter in new and exciting ways. Mark Rice is chair of the American studies department at St. John Fisher College. His work has been published in such periodicals as "Exposure," "Explore," and "Reviews in American History."

Photography and Flight

Photography and Flight

$33.95

Used for everything from geographic evaluation to secret spy missions, aerial photography has a rich and storied history, ably recounted here in Photography and Flight . Aerial photography is marked by its dependency on technological developments in both photography and aerospace, and the authors chart the history of this photography as it tracked the evolution of these technologies. Beginning with early images taken from hot-air balloons, fixed platforms, and subsequent handheld camera technology, Denis Cosgrove and William Fox then explain how military reconnaissance and governmental projects were instrumental in catalyzing these and other innovations in the field. They examine pivotal historical moments in which aerial photography began to establish itself as essential tool, such as in World War II military strategies, high-altitude photography taken from postwar rockets and aircraft, and the use of aerial photography during the cold war and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The book also explores the advancement of geographic scholarship through aerial photography, ranging from military excursions into Antarctica to the images of the curvature of the earth taken during the Apollo space missions. While digital technology and remote sensing have changed the landscape of photography, Photography and Flight argues that they have not diminished the significance of aerial photography in providing images of the earth. Rather, new technologies and resulting innovations such as Google Earth have enabled the mass democratization of access to such information. Photography and Flight ultimately reveals how the camera lens from far away continues to unearth telling details about the land and those who live upon it.

The Elements of Photography

The Elements of Photography

$39.95

Photography is a complex craft. In this highly visual, informative new book, Angela Faris Belt discusses the four crucial elements of photography that are essential for successful technical and conceptual image-making: .the photographic frame and its borders .quality of focus as determined by the aperture or lens .shutter speeds and their effects in relation to time and motion .the physical media used to create the aggregate image Step-by-step guidance including informative screen shots, traditional darkroom and Photoshop techniques, suggested exercises, and before and after images help both film and digital photographers improve their skills, learn new techniques, and better understand their craft. Photography as Activism

Photography as Activism

$29.95

You want to look through the lens of your camera and change the world. You want to capture powerful moments in one click that will impact the minds of other people. Photographic images are one of the most popular tools used to advocate for social and environmental awareness. This can be as close to home as drug use, prostitution, or pollution or as far away as famine, war, and the plight of refugees and migrant workers. One well-known example of an activist photographer would be landscape photographer Ansel Adams, who trudged to Washington with stunning images of the American west to advocate protecting these areas. His images and testimony were instrumental in creating the National Park System and garnering specific protection for Yellowstone National Park. More recently Robert Glenn Ketchum’s images of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge raised awareness of why this area should be protected. Nigel Barker’s seal photographs advocates against seal clubbing. What is your cause and how can you use your camera to make the world a better place? This book provides a comprehensive theory of, and history of, photography as activism. It also includes interviews with contemporary photographers. It is a call to action for young photographers to become activists, a primer of sorts, with advice for how to work with NGOs and non-profits, how to work safely in conflict zones and with suggestions for distribution on websites, blogs, and interactive agencies.

Workshop notes and a supplemental website will help you put Sarah’s techniques into practice immediately. The Dust Bowl Through the Lens: How Photography Revealed and Helped Remedy a National Disaster

The Dust Bowl Through the Lens: How Photography Revealed and Helped Remedy a National Disaster

$13.43

The Dust Bowl was a time of hardship and disaster. The worst ecological disaster in our nation’s history turned more than 100 million acres of fertile land almost completely to dust. Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to seek new homes and opportunities thousands of miles away, while millions more chose to stay and battle nature to save their land. These terrible repercussions from the Dust Bowl contributed to the Great Depression, which impacted the entire country. FDR’s New Deal army of photographers took to the roads during this national crisis to document the human struggle of the proud people of the plains. Their pictures spoke a thousand words, and a new form a storytelling–photojournalism–was born. These talented cameramen and women used photographs to inform the rest of the nation and bring about much-needed change. With the help of iconic images from Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Arthur Rothstein, and many more, Martin W. Sandler tells the story of this man-made natural disaster and these troubling economic times, ultimately showing how a nation can endure its darkest days through extraordinary courage and human spirit.

Introduced by Alexander McCall Smith, this follow-up to Johnson’s widely acclaimed "Anonymous "touches on birth, marriage, death, disease, hope, glory, and despair and a plethora of additional emotions, events, and human states, and will capture the imagination of any reader. The book documents the influence of an older generation of art photographers, such as the legendary Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans, and expands on a younger generation of photographers, including Tim Barber and J. H. Engstrom, to show how this style has gained traction and influence.

Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography

Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography

$3.46

"We are in the Stone Age of digital photography. We’ve figured out how to make some tools, but it is just now beginning to dawn on us what we might do with them. I’ve often been frustrated at the concentration on the technical aspect of digital photography with so little discussion of the aesthetics and heart behind the image making. This book is essentially a distillation of what I’ve been teaching over the last 25 years." Master photographer Stephen Johnson has been taking beautiful landscape photography for decades, and teaching others the practical art of image making since 1977. While he started out with traditional film camera techniques, Johnson is widely recognized among his peers as a pioneer of digital photography. "Stephen Johnson on Digital Photography" chronicles his ride on the bleeding edge of this medium’s evolution, and provides a practical in-depth introduction to digital photography that offers the latest techniques for beginning and experienced photographers alike. What sets this guide apart from other books on the topic is its approach and execution: This isn’t a Photoshop book, although Photoshop has its place within the book; it’s a book that a master teacher and photographer creates after a lifetime of showing others how to understand and make great photography. With 5 color photographs throughout, including black/gray duotones, and 715 illustrations reproduced with a 200 line screen, Johnson’s book covers everything from: The basics of digital photography Film camera techniques vs. digital Practical approaches of the filmless photographer Techniques of the digital darkroom A photographer (TM)s digital journey Photography, art and the future This is a holistic work (and method for teaching) that embraces the state of photographic tools and techniques, blended with suggestions and experiences on why I make photographs, Johnson says. At its best, photography rides that crest where technology and art intersect. But the deepest engagement that photography can bring remains its ability to capture and hold a moment before the lens. In this age of digital manipulation, that fundamental fact must be remembered.

In real life, I’d just say, Put on your zoom lens, set your f-stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.’ That’s what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned just like I would with a friendwithout all the technical explanations and techie photo speak. This isn’t a book of theoryfull of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. With over 200 of the most closely guarded photographic tricks of the trade, this book gets you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time. Each page covers a single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you’ll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If you’re tired of taking shots that look okay, and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, Why don’t my shots look like that? then this is the book for you.

Fantasea 5127 SharpEye Lens M46

Fantasea 5127 SharpEye Lens M46

$71.95

You bought a new camera and an underwater camera housing to go with it. You couldn’t wait to go diving and start photographing the exotic marine life, but now you are back above the surface the results aren’t quite what you were expecting. If so, you are not alone. Some of the most magnificent photographs taken underwater are close-up images of small fish, nudibranchs, corals, flatworms, eyes of larger fish and more. Considering the fact that macro photography is relatively easy to compose with respect to exposure, lighting and focus settings, it is often the most popular type of photography among beginner photographers. Most compact digital cameras feature a minimum focus distance that enables sharp images only to a certain extent and within a certain distance from the subject. For this reason, many of your close-up images might turn out to be blurred, and zooming in usually only makes the problem worse. The SharpEye Lens M46 is an accessory macro lens which fits over the housing’s port and can be installed and removed during the course of the dive. Image quality increases greatly when you move in close and eliminate as much water as possible between you and your subject. This macro lens allows you to get really close to very small marine creatures. It is perfect for shooting close-up images of fish, corals, textures and more. The macro lens magnifies the subject and enables the camera to focus on short distances for creating super sharp images. It can be mounted on 55/46mm threaded lens ports or any other lens port by using a compatible adaptor. Lens is a hard coated single Aspherical element which will work only underwater. The underwater focal length is 333 mm. Lens Barrel is a lightweight .9 oz (26g) corrosion resistant black anodized aluminum design with a 55mm threaded mount, and Includes M46 to M55 Step-up Ring.

Japanese American Resettlement Through the Lens

Japanese American Resettlement Through the Lens

$27.95

In Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens, Lane Ryo Hirabayashi gathers a unique collection of photographs by War Relocation Authority photographer Hikaru Iwasaki, the only full-time WRA photographer from the period still living. With substantive focus on resettlement – and in particular Iwasaki’s photos of Japanese Americans following their release from WRA camps from 1943 to 1945 – Hirabayashi explores the WRA’s use of photography in its mission not only to encourage “loyal” Japanese Americans to return to society at large as quickly as possible but also to convince Euro-Americans this was safe and advantageous. Hirabayashi also assesses the relative success of the WRA project, as well as the multiple uses of the photographs over time, first by the WRA and then by students, scholars, and community members in the present day. Although the photos have been used to illustrate a number of publications, this book is the first sustained treatment addressing questions directly related to official WRA photographs. How and under what conditions were they taken? Where were they developed, selected, and stored? How were they used during the 1940s? What impact did they have during and following the war? By focusing on the WRA’s Photographic Section, Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens makes a unique contribution to the body of literature on Japanese Americans during World War II.

Mamiya AF 28mm f4.5D Aspherical lens

$4729

The Mamiya AF 28mm f/4.5D Aspherical is a full-frame ultra wide angle lens and also the worldfs first medium format 28mm lens that can be used for film and digital backs. The use of aspheric lens elements produces outstanding optical performance. The 28mm f4.5 D is a full-frame, ultrawide lens that utilizes the latest aspheric lens technology to produce high resolution and large image circle coverage for film and digital backs. Unlike conventionally designed digital lenses, the Mamiya AF 28mm f/4.5 Aspherical was designed with the requirement that it works with digital and film systems. It is the worldfs first 28mm medium format lens with this capability. The Mamiya Sekor AF 28mm f/4.5 D is ideal for a wide range of applications, including commercial, architectural and outdoor photography. Compatible Cameras include the Mamiya 645AF (requires upgrade to 645AFD), 645AFD, 645AFDII and ZD camera (requires firmware upgrade). ??

 1.3: Images from My Phone

1.3: Images from My Phone

$29.95

On an out-of-town trip in 2007, Joel Grey found himself in a small St. Lucie, Florida museum, filled with bizarre and eminently photographable objects. Feeling, as he had with the images that became 2003’s Pictures I Had to Take, compelled to capture these provocative tableaux, but without his trusty Nikon Nikkormat by his side, Grey did the next-best thing he could—he reached for his cell phone. Grey had never had any use for the camera function of his Nokia 133 before, and was skeptical about the capabilities of its tiny 1.3-megapixel lens. But to his surprise, the same familiar perspective he’d always had when taking photographs was still there; even without a viewfinder, he could make the kinds of pictures he had always loved to make. The limitations of the format—the inability to control the aperture stop, focus, or any of the other variables of traditional photography besides framing—proved a thrilling new challenge, which Grey likens to “collaborating with a power larger than yourself.” Grey spent the next eight months shooting with his phone, and the result is 1.3: Images from My Phone, a collection of slices cut from diverse visual worlds: street art and still life, advertising and architecture, shadows and reflections, natural beauty and urban grit.

With a focal length spanning from a wide-angle 18mm up to a 250 mm telephoto zoom, with macro capabilities to boot, Sigma’s 18-250mm could easily be your camera’s first all-in-one lens, or a great replacement for several smaller lenses that you’re looking to consolidate. Sigma redesigned the optical and structural design of this lens in order to achieve a relatively compact size, at 4.0 long, as well as a close minimum focusing distance of 13.8 for macro photography.
