•Couple – The challenge here lies in unfolding the relation between two people like, husband and wife or mother and son.

•Small group – By and large theses type of images consists of three to seven people and the photographer tries to bond the relation between group members.

•Large group – The photographer is more challenged when it comes to capturing large group in films since it requires more human and technical logistics.

•Environmental- In this case the subject is present in their own territory like the gardener taking care of plants in the garden or a person in his or her favorite room.

•Sporting- Sporting shot shows the subject in the sporting environment with their uniform or equipment and is different from an action sport.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, photographic composition has been taught mostly by applying the principles from the field of graphic design. But the factor that distinguishes the work of master photographers is their ability to see and describe scenes visually. This book follows contemporary educational methods used to teach fine arts such as drawing and painting, concentrating on teaching the perception of critical visual elements and understanding how they will be rendered photographically. “In many respects, this book can do for photography what Betty Edwards’ best-selling Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain did for drawing. Many people believe that seeing is a mysterious gift, the so-called ?artist’s eye.” says Krages. The core of the book is a group of sixty exercise that readers perform to learn how to perceive points, lines, and shapes in static and dynamic settings. These exercises are structured enough to push photographers to develop their cognitive abilities while at the same time flexible enough to allow for individual creative expression. They also show the importance of knowing about the subject and provide some history about the specific genres at the heart of each exercise.

The Bauhaus Group

The Bauhaus Group

$23.99

Nicholas Fox Weber, for thirty-three years head of the Albers Foundation, spent many years with Anni and Josef Albers, the only husband-and-wife artistic pair at the Bauhaus (she was a textile artist; he a professor and an artist, in glass, metal, wood, and photography). The Alberses told him their own stories and described life at the Bauhaus with their fellow artists and teachers, Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as well these figures’ lesser-known wives and girlfriends. In this extraordinary group biography, Weber brilliantly brings to life the Bauhaus geniuses and the community of the pioneering art school in Germany’s Weimar and Dessau in the 1920s and early 1930s. Here are: Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, the architect who streamlined design early in his career and who saw the school as a place for designers to collaborate in an ideal setting . . . a dashing hussar, the ardent young lover of the renowned femme fatale Alma Mahler, beginning when she was the wife of composer Gustav Mahler . . . Paul Klee, the onlooker, smoking his pipe, observing Bauhaus dances as well as his colleagues’ lectures from the back of the room . . . the cook who invented recipes and threw together his limited ingredients with the same spontaneity, sense of proportion, and fascination that underscored his paintings . . . Wassily Kandinsky, the Russian-born pioneer of abstract painting, guarding a secret tragedy one could never have guessed from his lively paintings, in which he used bold colors not just for their visual vibrancy, but for their sound effects . . . Josef Albers, who entered the Bauhaus as a student in 1920 and was one of the seven remaining faculty members when the school was closed by the Gestapo in 1933 . . . Annelise Else Frieda Fleischmann, a Berlin heiress, an intrepid young woman, who later, as Anni Albers, made art the focal point of her existence . . . Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, imperious, decisive, often harsh, an architect who became directorthe lastof the Bauhaus, and the person who guided the school’s final days after SS storm troopers raided the premises. Weber captures the life, spirit, and flair with which these geniuses lived, as well as their consuming goal of making art and architecture. A portrait infused with their fulsome embrace of life, their gift for laughter, and the powerful force of their individual artistic personalities. From the Hardcover edition.

For street photographers, New York has always been a city of unparalleled visual excitement, teeming with diverse people and distinctive neighborhoods. New York: Capital of Photography examines how photographers chronicled New York throughout the twentieth century, how the city changed their vision, and how their work affected ideas about New York throughout the world. This beautifully illustrated book presents the work of both famous and lesser-known photographers, many of them Jewish. An underlying theme in this pictorial history of New York is the critical role played by Jewish sensibility. Max Kozloff begins with the development of street photography that emerged in New York in the early 1900s with a local school of photographers led by Alfred Stieglitz. Documenting work, loneliness, play, conflict, love, and spectacle, this group came to define urban perception as the characteristic visual experience of modernity. Some photographers also became social activists, observing New York’s ethnic and racial diversity and focusing their lenses on newcomers and marginalized groups. From the 1930s to 1960s, Kozloff shows, members of the New York School envisioned the city in a different way, as a processing center for immigrants, a site of commercial display, and a crossroads of world culture. In the 1950s and 1960s, photographers saw New York as an uneasy battleground, and their pictures caught the forces of civil rights, sexual liberation, and leftist politics as they clashed with traditional powers. Finally, as the century waned, photographers became more self-conscious, exploring their own and their friends’ identities through the camera’s eye. From Lewis Hine’s 1905 picture of recentimmigrants at Ellis Island to Nan-Goldin’s portraits of her friends over the past thirty years, these photographs reveal the true vitality of New York.

The Alberses told him their own stories and described life at the Bauhaus with their fellow artists and teachers, Walter Gropius, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as well as with these figures’ lesser-known wives and girlfriends. In this extraordinary group biography, Weber brilliantly brings to life the pioneering art school in Germany’s Weimar and Dessau in the 1920s and early 1930s, and captures the spirit and flair with which these Bauhaus geniuses lived, as well as their consuming goal of making art and architecture.

The Adventure of Japanese Photography 1860 - 1890

The Adventure of Japanese Photography 1860 – 1890

$25.15

It was truly an adventure to travel to Japan in the second half of the 19th century, loaded with unwieldy and heavy photographic equipment. From their Yokohama studios, the pioneers of photography in Japan, Felice Beato and Adolpho Farsari, exported unfamiliar and remarkable pictures to Europe, giving the West an idea of what life was like in ancient Japan. Their Japanese pupils established a new professional group: Images of "ancient" Japan were produced specifically for the Western public, staged in studios, later hand-colored and compiled in richly ornamented lacquer albums. This book documents not only a unique chapter of the history of photography, but also provides insights about the way European and, later, Japanese photographers staged their image of Japan in accordance with Western expectations. The 90 photographs of the March Collection published in this volume, many of which are being made available to the public for the first time ever, depict the vanished feudal Japan in a way unique both in its historical meaning and in its aesthetic appearance. They include rare works by Felice Beato and Adolpho Farsari and numerous pictures by their Japanese followers Ueno Hikoma, Kusabe Kinbei, Tamamura Kihei, and Ogawa Kazume. Through intensive research, it was for the first time possible to attribute several works to the artists. Claudia Delank is a specialist in East Asian Art, teaches at various German universities, and has researched and published on early Japanese photography.

Over some 30 years as a professor and curator at Princeton University, Peter C. Bunnell has been a profoundly influential force in conversations about photography’s past and present. He has written extensively–articles, books, catalogue essays–and this up-to-date collection of texts from throughout his career supersedes the beloved out-of-print "Degrees of Guidance, " which collected his work through the early 1980s. Most of these 34 essays are devoted to individual photographers, predominantly American, with the balance written about three key galleries that played crucial early roles in the medium’s recognition and marketing. Over the years, Bunnell has sustained deep and mutually respectful relationships with photographers ranging from Minor White to Ruth Bernhard, Aaron Siskind and Jerry Uelsmann. His unsurpassed understanding of their work as well as that of contemporary masters makes his an enlightening view of a field that has undergone extraordinary changes under his watch. "Inside the Photograph" offers a unique personal perspective on the world of art photography during its shift from a small group of practitioners collected by an even smaller group of devotees to a supercharged international marketplace. Includes writings on Diane Arbus, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Eikoh Hosoe, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston and others.

The Photography of Alfred Stieglitz: Georgia O'Keeffe's Enduring Legacy

The Photography of Alfred Stieglitz: Georgia O’Keeffe’s Enduring Legacy

$23.26

Soon after George Eastman House opened, curator of Beaumont Newhall sought to acquire the work of Alfred Stieglitz, arguably the most important photographer of the twentieth century. He worked closely with Georgia O’Keeffe and gathered a group of 152 photographs that represent the full range of Stieglitz’s ideology and career. He also collected objects largely unique to the Eastman House, including lantern slides, autochromes, and cameras. The publication of this book coincided with a traveling exhibition that opened in summer of 2000 not only to document the Stieglitz collection at George Eastman House but also to explore O’Keeffe’s role in the shaping and preservation of Stieglitz’s legacy. The artistic collaboration between Stieglitz and O’Keeffe is well documented–she was the subject of many of his most important photographs. What is less well understood is their collaboration on the preservation of photography and their concern for the role of the institution in educating the public. This book presents Stieglitz’s work in a new light and offers a new analysis of one of the greatest partnerships in the history of art.

Victor Regnault and the Advance of Photography: The Art of Avoiding Errors

Victor Regnault and the Advance of Photography: The Art of Avoiding Errors

$78.99

This lavishly illustrated book establishes the towering influence of the scientist Victor Regnault (1810-1878) in the earliest decades of photography, a period of experimentation ripe with artistic, commercial, and scientific possibility. Regnault has a double significance to the early history of photography, as the first leader of the Societe Francaise de Photographie (S.F.P.) and as the maker of more than two hundred calotype (paper negative) portraits and landscapes. His photographic and scientific careers intersected a third field with his appointment in 1852 as director of the Sevres porcelain works. Readers are treated to Regnault’s own beguiling pastoral, garden, and forest scenes; striking portraits of the scientists and artists in his circle of friends; quirky images of acoustic experiments; and an insider’s view of the Sevres porcelain works. Regnault’s richly varied photographs also encompass perhaps the most extensive group of family portraits in early photography, and his romanticized landscapes reflect a moment when the rural outskirts of Paris were being aggressively suburbanized and industrialized. Occupying a unique and powerful position in the overlapping spheres of photography, science, industry, and art, Regnault was elected president of the newly formed S.F.P. in 1855. By examining his intertwined activities against the backdrop of French photography’s nascent pursuit of institutional legitimacy, this book illuminates an important and overlooked body of images and the irregular cultural terrain of early photography.

Excerpt: Ansel Easton Adams Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902 April 22, 1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist , best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West , especially in Yosemite National Park . One of his most famous photographs was Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California. With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs and the work of those he taught the system. Adams primarily used large-format cameras, despite their size, weight, setup time, and film cost, because their high resolution helped ensure sharpness in his images. Adams founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham , which in turn created the Museum of Modern Art ‘s department of photography. Adams’s timeless and visually stunning photographs are reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books, making his photographs widely recognizable. Life Childhood Adams was born in the Western Addition of San Francisco, California , to distinctly upper-class parents Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray Adams. He was an only child and was named after his uncle Ansel Easton. The Adams family came from New England, having migrated from the north of Ireland in the early 1700s. His grandfather founded and built a prosperous lumber business, which his father later ran, though his father s natural talents

Carlo Valsecchi lives and works in Milan. His color images of industrial sites, warehouses, rooms adapted for special production, and enlarged details of machinery have their clear progenitors: from the American Precisionism of Charles Sheeler to the Central European photography of the ’30s. In other words, they emerged from a feeling of amazement at the new industrial landscape that so radically and rapidly took form within the span of a few decades. His photographs capture the industrial environment with an alien eye, as if things were functioning and living beyond human presence and control. His photographic investigation travels within space, be it industrial, architectural, or landscape.Valsecchi’s photographs are always slightly overexposed, so as to make the image more luminous and ghostly – and unforgettable.Carlo Valsecchi, born in Brescia in 1965, lives and works in Milan. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in such cities as Milan, Luxembourg, Turin and Bergamo. Te

A Couple of Ways of Doing Something

A Couple of Ways of Doing Something

$50

A Couple of Ways of Doing Something replicates a deluxe limited-edition portfolio whose initial run was only 75 copies. This clothbound edition preserves the luxurious sensibility of the original with 22 extraordinary oversized daguerreotypes printed in rich tritone. Working with daguerreotype master Jerry Spagnoli to conquer the complexities of this venerable process, which yields images of astonishing detail and gravity, Chuck Close photographed many of the same artist-friends who have made regular appearances in his paintings over the years: Laurie Anderson, Lyle Ashton Harris, Cecily Brown, Gregory Crewdson, Carroll Dunham, Ellen Gallagher, Philip Glass, Bob Holman, Elizabeth Murray, Elizabeth Peyton, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, James Siena, Lorna Simpson, Kiki Smith, James Turrell, Robert Wilson, Terry Winters, Lisa Yuskavage and himself. Each image is complemented by a poem on its subject by Bob Holman, the celebrated and widely published New York School poet who originated and hosted the famous Poetry Slams at the Nuyorican Poets Cafi and now runs the Bowery Poetry Club. With the counterpoint of Holman’s engaging poetry, the collected work becomes a transfixing group portrait of Close’s influential and highly creative circle of friends and colleagues, as well as an exploration of a challenging photographic medium. A traveling exhibition of the work will launch in November 2006 at the Aperture Gallery.
