Project Professionalism for Your Business with Quality Business Portraits
You’re a savvy business person that recognizes the importance of your presence in the business community. You have a website, you are building an online presence and developing an Internet marketing and social media strategy. Very good! However, do you have a picture of yourself to display online? How old is that picture (2, 3, even 5 years old)? What does that picture say about you? Does your portrait convey a professional image that reflects who you are today? As the saying goes, ‘A picture says a 1000 words’. This is so true in a positive and negative way. A good quality portrait can convey confidence, professionalism, someone approachable, and someone your viewers can relate to. However, a low quality, aged portrait can have a reverse affect; you can be viewed as less than professional, not a serious business person, or in a subtle way… not someone they care to do business with. If you are serious about marketing, then you need to invest in a quality business portrait that captures your personality and conveys how you want others to perceive you. A business or executive portrait is a head and shoulders portrait. It is a portrait of an individual and can be a set of individual portraits for the key employees in a business.
- Where do you use a business portrait? Your Website: – About Us page next to your bio – Mission and Vision page where you win over clients with your principles Your Blog(s): – Header of your blog to reinforce who is writing and/or publishing the blog – In the resource block at the bottom of each article where you convince people to click the link that goes to your website’s key landing page. – About Us page where you describe your company / yourself. Your Social Media sites: – Twitter where you pass on key information to your community – Linked-In where you hang your professional hat and talk business – Facebook where you connect with where people are informally hanging out Your Business Cards Your Resume Printed Advertisements, Press Releases, and Public Relations
- Where do you find a quality business portrait? 1) Search the Internet for local photographer listings and review their portfolios – Business portrait photographer – Executive portrait photographer – Headshot photographer
2) Search other local businesses to look at their portraits then ask them who the photographer was.
3) Ask your Chamber of Commerce for recommendations
There are many different types of photographers, you’ll want to find one that specializes in people and specifically business or executive portraits. Review a photographer’s portfolio and ask yourself if their images convey how you’d like to be viewed? Select a couple of photographers and setup a face-to-face meeting.
- How to look professional?
Professional is a broad term and a professional portrait can be created in many different ways depending on how you want your prospective clients to view you. To help you answer the question, look at your competitors’ websites and look through photographer’s online portfolios to see what the possibilities are and which images might best represent you.
- What setting do you want to be photographed in?
- In the studio to employ distinct portrait lighting and background – In your executive office space (desk, bookshelves, window view) – Out ‘on the floor’ of your business – At a client – Within an environment where your product or services are used – An outdoor setting like a park, lake, or beach
- What background and lighting is best? You want a background that complements your clothing colors, separates you from the background and isn’t distracting. It can be a busy background that conveys a certain environment (bookshelf, trees, your business), but the background MUST be sufficiently out-of-focus so the viewer’s eyes naturally flow from it to your face. – Classic look: Subtle solid colors, neutral colors, neutral textured backgrounds – Entrepreneur look: Use your lobby, out-on-floor of your business – Vibrant look: Bright saturated colors, high-key white – Casual look: Outdoors with out-of-focus foliage – Strong authoritative look: Darker background with carefully placed lighting
- What tone do you want to convey? You need consider aspects of your personality that you want to show? – Casual or formal? – Serious or smiling? – Authority figure or approachable? – With your glasses or not?
- How should you dress? Your portrait will represent you and your business, so you need to dress for success. Consider wearing business attire that is appropriate for your client base; clothing that conveys success and engages your customer-base. – Men: a suit jacket, sweater, or dress shirt. – Women: a blouse or a tailored jacket. – Long sleeves are more flattering. – Avoid wearing patterns, they draw the eye from the subject’s face. – Solid mid-tone colors that don’t blend with the background – Avoid wearing bright reds, yellows and oranges, they are a distraction – Avoid wearing white or flesh tone colors (beige, tan, peach, pink), they blend with your face – Avoid clothing that shows wrinkles, it conveys sloppy and unprofessional look. However, you must feel comfortable in your clothing or your images will show a stiff and unnatural look. Get photographed in at least 2 wardrobe changes per setting and at least 2 settings. What might look good during the shoot may look different in the final image (ex. Something out of place or just doesn’t feel right). Having options is always a good thing!
- What about jewelry? Jewelry can complement your wardrobe and emit a professional polished look. Like the colors and patterns of your wardrobe, jewelry should be an ‘accessory’ and not be so bold as to distract from your face. It should only accent your wardrobe and not overpower it. For women, wear shorter necklaces that conform to the neckline of your shirt. Pearl necklaces and earrings offer a classic look.
- What about make-up? Your make-up should reflect how you are seen with your clients. If you don’t normally wear make-up, then keep it light with a basic foundation to even skin tones and reduce shine. Like jewelry, make-up should not be overdone. – The camera tends to emphasize make-up, especially blush. – Avoid glossy or shimmery make-up, it will catch the light and be distracting. – Bring extra powder to the portrait session to avoid facial shine (nose, chin, forehead).
- Should you purchase multiple images? Consider having different wardrobe and different settings for different purposes. It is helpful to have a range of photos to use for your business. – Website – Social media sites – Conference agendas – Printed ads – Press releases Consider rotating out images with a slightly different pose or look over time Purchase several different images from the same photographer to save money, time, and provide consistency that shows an added measure of professionalism.
- What services should the photographer offer? – Good customer service: prompt replies, good communication skills, personable – Suggestions on setting, wardrobe, lighting, make-up, and posing – Professional quality portrait retouching (ex: removing blemishes, reducing under-eye circles, brightening eyes, whitening teeth, reducing wrinkles)
- What product should the photographer offer? – A professionally retouched image that doesn’t look overdone, minimized distractions, and accurately represents you. – A high resolution digital copy for printed media (ex. 300 dpi: 8×10) – A set of web-ready digital images (ex. 72 dpi: 150 pixel, 300 pixel, 550 pixel)
- Who owns the copyright to the image? The photographer retains the image copyright but grants you permission to use your image for business purposes. Some photographers will charge different usage rates based on its purpose and breadth of distribution that image will have (ex. National ad campaign); other photographers will grant full usage rights to the client as a part of the portrait image fee. You need to ask about usage fees up front. Select a photographer where you can arrange for unlimited use; you want the freedom to broadcast your image widely on the Internet and on printed media as you see fit.
- How much should a business portrait cost? That depends on the skill of your photographer and what you are looking for. On the low end, a 1 hour in-studio session might cost $50-$100 just for the sitting or session fee which does not include the images, digital prints, or the rights to use them.

Capable Workplace Learning $275.43 Capable Workplace Learning is about Capable people, Capable Organisations and an underlying belief in the applicability of the concept of Capability to Work, Place and Learning. In this book, Cairns and Stephenson present a case for the development of human Capability, in life, in work, and in the lifespace. They trace the development of the Capability concept arguing that it embraces and goes beyond competence. They draw on over 35 years of experience of direct involvement in enhancing adult Capability through education at all levels.Capability, they also argue, applies as much to organisations and working practices as it does to the individuals involved and call for synergy between organisational and personal capability. Further, the book presents a case that learning through work, whereby people utilise their work experiences and activities as the opportunity, process, place and content of what they are learning whilst they are “working” has, they suggest, established itself as a creditable way of looking at the knowledge development we all encounter and engage with whilst working. The authors explore a range of examples of Capable practice in business and higher education and present a number of portraits of individuals whose lifework, personifies the Capability at work concept. In addition, they suggest, governments should go beyond the rather narrow aspiration of raising skills levels, to encouraging more people to experience formulating and solving the problem of their own development. |

Corporate Warriors: The Rise of the Privatized Military Industry $0.99 Some have claimed that “War is too important to be left to the generals,” but P. W. Singer asks “What about the business executives”? Breaking out of the guns-for-hire mold of traditional mercenaries, corporations now sell skills and services that until recently only state militaries possessed. Their products range from trained commando teams to strategic advice from generals. This new “Privatized Military Industry” encompasses hundreds of companies, thousands of employees, and billions of dollars in revenue. Whether as proxies or suppliers, such firms have participated in wars in Africa, Asia, the Balkans, and Latin America. More recently, they have become a key element in U.S. military operations. Private corporations working for profit now sway the course of national and international conflict, but the consequences have been little explored. In this book, Singer provides the first account of the military services industry and its broader implications. Corporate Warriors includes a description of how the business works, as well as portraits of each of the basic types of companies: military providers that offer troops for tactical operations; military consultants that supply expert advice and training; and military support companies that sell logistics, intelligence, and engineering. The privatization of warfare allows startling new capabilities and efficiencies in the ways that war is carried out. At the same time, however, Singer finds that the entrance of the profit motive onto the battlefield raises a series of troubling questions-for democracy, for ethics, for management, for human rights, and for national security. |

Digital Capital: Harnessing the Power of Business Webs $0.01 This book begins by trumpeting the MP3 online music site as the quintessential example of an information age “business web.” “MP3's success is the product of an Internet-based alliance — a business web — of consumers, businesses … and content providers. It exemplifies how business webs have risen to challenge the industrial-age corporation as the basis for competitive strategy.” Consequently, the authors conclude that the traditional music-distribution channel once dominated by such firms as RCA and CBS “is in tatters.” While that characterization soft-pedals the furious legal counterattack that traditional music distributors launched against MP3, the authors nonetheless make a compelling case for their basic premise: “B-webs are the mechanism for the accumulation of digital capital, the knowledge- and relationship-based currency of the new economy. To succeed in the digital economy, every employee, entrepreneur and manager must embrace a new b-web strategy.” This instructive book provides portraits of companies that have already taken that step, and offers readers a detailed blueprint for following their examples. Related Titles: Coauthors Don Tapscott, David Ticoll and Alex Lowy previously collaborated on Blueprint to the Digital Economy: Creating Wealth in the Era of E-Business and Tapscott wrote The Digital Economy: Promise and Peril in the Age of Networked Intelligence. Business-to-business exchanges are one type of business web often used in commodity-based industries. Duality Of Genius Basil Markesinis $49.9 Mozart, Goethe, Bernini, Talleyrand, Jaques Louis David, Henry Clay Frick, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Mikhail Psellos here are some of the great achievers that most people have heard of. But few know much about their extraordinary lives; fewer still, realize that alongside their grand public persona there was a darker, less attractive one that is reflected in their work. Why have such factors been ignored or underplayed? Deliberate concealment? Difficulty in discovering them? Or a misguided belief that great achievers must be left standing, shining on their pedestals. Modern psychobiography doubts the last reason but accepts the difficulties and dangers that accompany the collation and assessment of relevant information. This book attempts a candid narrative, warts and all of the lives of some great figures from the worlds of painting, sculpture, politics, philosophy, law, and business but does so also by placing their lives in the context of their times. The result, a series of essayistic portraits built around themes close to the lives of those described and brought into greater relief by the inclusion of over ninety beautifully reproduced colour illustrations. The aim is to allow the general, educated reader to learn more about the genius of creation. Those inter-ested in history, biography, psychobiography, and the arts, and also believe in the need of a broader culture in times of excessive specialization, will enjoy this candid and wide-ranging book written by a widely travelled and acclaimed author. |

Chapters: The Bellelli Family, L’absinthe, Place de La Concorde, Portraits, at the Stock Exchange, Count Lepic and His Daughters, Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Bellelli Family, also known as Family Portrait, is an oil painting on canvas by Edgar Degas (18341917), painted ca. 18581867, housed in the Musée d’Orsay. A masterwork of Degas’ youth, the painting is a portrait of his aunt, her husband, and their two young daughters. While finishing his artistic training in Italy, Degas drew and painted his aunt Laura, her husband the baron Gennaro Bellelli (18121864), and their daughters Giulia and Giovanna. Although it is not known for certain when or where Degas executed the painting, it is believed that he utilized studies done in Italy to complete the work after his return to Paris. Laura, his father’s sister, is depicted in a dress which symbolizes mourning for her father, who had recently died and appears in the framed portrait behind her. The baron was an Italian patriot exiled from Naples, living in Florence. Laura Bellelli’s countenance is dignified and austere, her gesture connected with those of her daughters. Her husband, by contrast, appears to be separated from his family. His association with business and the outside world is implied by his position at his desk. Giovanna, the younger daughter, holds a livelier pose than that of her sister Giulia, whose restraint appears to underscore the familial tensions. Oil sketch of Giulia. In 1856 Degas left his home in Paris to study art and visit family relations in Italy, arriving in Naples on 17 July. In 1857 he traveled between Naples, where he stayed with his grandfather, Hilaire Degas, and Rome. At the end of July 1858 Laura Bellelli wrote to Degas from Naples, in… More: |

Forbes Greatest Technology Stories $0.99 Forbes Greatest Technology Stories In the tradition of the international bestseller Forbes Greatest Business Stories of All Time, this new, authoritative book from Forbes tells a compelling series of business tales-this time focusing on the rapid-fire technology frontier. In stories filled with human drama and high-tech excitement, Forbes Greatest Technology Stories takes you inside today’s Digital Age business empires and introduces you to the dreamers and schemers, visionaries and moguls, and entrepreneurs and inventors who built them. The past half century has been a time of unparalleled technological innovation. The sheer power and mobility that technology has made available to millions of people around the world today surpasses anything we could have dreamed of even fifty years ago. Most historians of the high-tech revolution tend to focus on the exploits of men and women of scientific genius, invoking names such as Lovelace, Babbage, Turing, von Neuman, and Cray. But, as Forbes contributing editor Jeffrey Young shows in this fascinating account, while science may have provided the fuel, business was the engine that drove the epic shift from the Machine Age to the Digital Age. Beginning in 1937, with the invention of the first crude electronic calculator by a renegade physics professor at the University of Iowa, and culminating with the Internet Wars of 1998, Jeffrey Young chronicles six decades of unbridled technological innovation and business genius. Writing in a crisp, fast-paced journalistic style, he whisks readers from the Truman-era engineering labs of MIT to the virtual reaches of cyberspace, from the “wirehead” garages of Silicon Valley to the boardrooms of Microsoft, pausing along the way to demystify the technological innovations involved and the roles they played in the hightech revolution. And he provides compelling portraits of entrepreneurs and inventors such as John Vincent Atanasoff, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Andy Grove, and Craig McCaw, as |

George Washington and the Art of Business: Leadership Principles of America’s First Commander-in-Chief $1.95 George Washington ranks as one of the great military leaders in history. The character traits he exemplified, and the leadership skills he employed, enabled him to defeat what was then the world’s most powerful nation. In this marvelous book, Mark McNeilly shows today’s managers how they can learn from Washington’s career—both his triumphs and setbacks—to succeed as leaders in their chosen field. McNeilly paints vivid portraits of some of the crucial moments in Washington’s military career, from the early debacle on Long Island Heights to the masterstroke at Trenton. There Washington, aided by his use of intelligence and disinformation, and by his great fortitude in the face of truly daunting conditions, routed the Hessians. McNeilly uses these stirring military encounters to underscore Washington’s managerial genius: to persuade and inspire, to open up the decision-making process, to seize opportunities when they arise, to persevere when setbacks occurred, and to learn from his mistakes. Indeed, the true value of the book lies in McNeilly’s brilliant ability to link military and business strategy, revealing that successful corporate leaders must possess many of the same traits that Washington did. Using examples from the NFL, Cadillac, Coke, Samsung, Embraer, IBM and others, McNeilly shows how business leaders can apply Washington’s principles for success. Blending colorful military and business history with crystal-clear commentary, George Washington and the Art of Business belongs of the shelves of all executives who want to hone their leadership skills. |

Harlem on the Verge $35 These magnificent color portraits document both the people and the buildings of Harlem on the eve of great change. Gentrification and the influx of large chain stores are replacing small business, store fronts, memorials on walls, and other visual evidence of the complex range of cultural identities that residents had woven into the streets of their neighborhoods. With a sense of both dedication and desperation (to beat the developer’s clock) Alice Attie has produced a beautiful record of a world rapidly being lost. |
