On Photography $81.25 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles On Photography is a 1977 collection of essays by Susan Sontag. It originally appeared as a series of essays in the New York Review of Books between 1973 and 1977. In the book, Sontag expresses her views on the history and presentday role of photography in capitalist societies as of the 1970s. Sontag discusses many examples of modern photography. Among these, she contrasts Diane Arbuss work with that of Depressionera documentary photography commissioned by the Farm Security Administration. She also explores the history of American photography in relation to the idealistic notions of America put forth by Walt Whitman and traces these ideas through to the increasingly cynical aesthetic notions of the 1970s, particularly in relation to Arbus and Andy Warhol. Photo Odyssey $18 In 1853 explorer Colonel John Charles Fremont invited photographer and fine artist Solomon Nunes Carvalho to accompany his fifth, and final, western expedition. As the official photographer, Carvalho documented the trip from the Mississippi River to Utah with daguerreotypes — a unique and often unwieldy form of photography that produces images on large silver plates. Carvalho was a skilled photographer, but he was a novice on the trail and he battled with the hardships of the journey. He not only was challenged by the physical strain but, as an observant Jew, struggled to maintain his commitment to Judaism, even when observing strict dietary laws meant that he did not eat. Carvalho’s own words, from the journal he kept and from letters he wrote home to his wife, provide a vivid firsthand view of his remarkable adventure. With many apt excerpts from his descriptions, author Arlene Hirschfelder has written a detailed account of the life of this little-known, yet widely accomplished, man. |

Sights Once Seen: Daguerreotyping Fremont’s Last Expedition Through the Rockies $133.32 Little is known about the fifth and last western expedition of the celebrated explorer John Charles Fremont. The great effort to survey a transcontinental railway route across the 38th parallel ended short of success in the snows of Utah in 1854 but involved a meticulous photographic documentation — in daguerreotypes — of the route from the Mississippi westward. It was believed that a central railroad across the country would favor abolitionists in the great debate then raging in the country over slavery. Solomon Nunes Carvalho was hired by Fremont to photograph the expedition — the first time a western expeditionary survey had been systematically documented in photographs. Tragically, the daguerreotypes were destroyed by fire, and Fremont’s fifth expedition was lost to history. Author and daguerreotypist Robert Shlaer remarkably has reconstructed the expedition in 120 original daguerreotypes. Using Fremont’s maps, expedition documents, and Carvalho’s diary accounts, Shlaer recreates the lost expedition across America’s most breathtaking landscape using photography’s first and most venerable method of daguerreotypy. This book will coincide with a nationally traveling exhibition of the same name to open March 2000 at the Palace of the Governors (Museum of New Mexico) in Santa Fe. |

Viper Force: 56th Fighter Wing–To Fly and Fight the F-16 $18.21 During an official ceremony at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, on July 21, 1980, the USAF gave the nickname “Fighting Falcon” to the General Dynamics F-16, the name inspired by the Air Force Academy Falcon football team. But pilots often have unofficial nicknames for their airplanes, and any pilot who flies the F-16 or any mechanic who works on it will only call it the “Viper.”Viper came from the F-16’s resemblance to a snake when seen from head-on in the landing attitude. Great fighter aircraft need great pilots, and great pilots acquire their highly specialized skills through intense training at Luke Air Force Base, just west of Phoenix, Arizona, home of the 56th Fighter Wing of the USAF’s Air Education and Training Command. Many hours of hard work are necessary to mold young pilots into Viper Drivers, a special designation that sets them apart from other fighter pilots. From the rigors of training to the excitement of combat, Lt. Col. Robert “Cricket” Renner, USAF (Ret.), captures the lives of the Viper Drivers in their own words and alongside the amazing air-to-air photography of John M. Dibbs. |
