Project Professionalism for Your Business with Quality Business Portraits

You’re a savvy business person that recognizes the importance of your presence in the business community. You have a website, you are building an online presence and developing an Internet marketing and social media strategy. Very good! However, do you have a picture of yourself to display online? How old is that picture (2, 3, even 5 years old)? What does that picture say about you? Does your portrait convey a professional image that reflects who you are today? As the saying goes, ‘A picture says a 1000 words’. This is so true in a positive and negative way. A good quality portrait can convey confidence, professionalism, someone approachable, and someone your viewers can relate to. However, a low quality, aged portrait can have a reverse affect; you can be viewed as less than professional, not a serious business person, or in a subtle way… not someone they care to do business with. If you are serious about marketing, then you need to invest in a quality business portrait that captures your personality and conveys how you want others to perceive you. A business or executive portrait is a head and shoulders portrait. It is a portrait of an individual and can be a set of individual portraits for the key employees in a business.

- Where do you use a business portrait? Your Website: – About Us page next to your bio – Mission and Vision page where you win over clients with your principles Your Blog(s): – Header of your blog to reinforce who is writing and/or publishing the blog – In the resource block at the bottom of each article where you convince people to click the link that goes to your website’s key landing page. – About Us page where you describe your company / yourself. Your Social Media sites: – Twitter where you pass on key information to your community – Linked-In where you hang your professional hat and talk business – Facebook where you connect with where people are informally hanging out Your Business Cards Your Resume Printed Advertisements, Press Releases, and Public Relations

- Where do you find a quality business portrait? 1) Search the Internet for local photographer listings and review their portfolios – Business portrait photographer – Executive portrait photographer – Headshot photographer

2) Search other local businesses to look at their portraits then ask them who the photographer was.

3) Ask your Chamber of Commerce for recommendations

There are many different types of photographers, you’ll want to find one that specializes in people and specifically business or executive portraits. Review a photographer’s portfolio and ask yourself if their images convey how you’d like to be viewed? Select a couple of photographers and setup a face-to-face meeting.

- How to look professional?

Professional is a broad term and a professional portrait can be created in many different ways depending on how you want your prospective clients to view you. To help you answer the question, look at your competitors’ websites and look through photographer’s online portfolios to see what the possibilities are and which images might best represent you.

- What setting do you want to be photographed in?

- In the studio to employ distinct portrait lighting and background – In your executive office space (desk, bookshelves, window view) – Out ‘on the floor’ of your business – At a client – Within an environment where your product or services are used – An outdoor setting like a park, lake, or beach

- What background and lighting is best? You want a background that complements your clothing colors, separates you from the background and isn’t distracting. It can be a busy background that conveys a certain environment (bookshelf, trees, your business), but the background MUST be sufficiently out-of-focus so the viewer’s eyes naturally flow from it to your face. – Classic look: Subtle solid colors, neutral colors, neutral textured backgrounds – Entrepreneur look: Use your lobby, out-on-floor of your business – Vibrant look: Bright saturated colors, high-key white – Casual look: Outdoors with out-of-focus foliage – Strong authoritative look: Darker background with carefully placed lighting

- What tone do you want to convey? You need consider aspects of your personality that you want to show? – Casual or formal? – Serious or smiling? – Authority figure or approachable? – With your glasses or not?

- How should you dress? Your portrait will represent you and your business, so you need to dress for success. Consider wearing business attire that is appropriate for your client base; clothing that conveys success and engages your customer-base. – Men: a suit jacket, sweater, or dress shirt. – Women: a blouse or a tailored jacket. – Long sleeves are more flattering. – Avoid wearing patterns, they draw the eye from the subject’s face. – Solid mid-tone colors that don’t blend with the background – Avoid wearing bright reds, yellows and oranges, they are a distraction – Avoid wearing white or flesh tone colors (beige, tan, peach, pink), they blend with your face – Avoid clothing that shows wrinkles, it conveys sloppy and unprofessional look. However, you must feel comfortable in your clothing or your images will show a stiff and unnatural look. Get photographed in at least 2 wardrobe changes per setting and at least 2 settings. What might look good during the shoot may look different in the final image (ex. Something out of place or just doesn’t feel right). Having options is always a good thing!

- What about jewelry? Jewelry can complement your wardrobe and emit a professional polished look. Like the colors and patterns of your wardrobe, jewelry should be an ‘accessory’ and not be so bold as to distract from your face. It should only accent your wardrobe and not overpower it. For women, wear shorter necklaces that conform to the neckline of your shirt. Pearl necklaces and earrings offer a classic look.

- What about make-up? Your make-up should reflect how you are seen with your clients. If you don’t normally wear make-up, then keep it light with a basic foundation to even skin tones and reduce shine. Like jewelry, make-up should not be overdone. – The camera tends to emphasize make-up, especially blush. – Avoid glossy or shimmery make-up, it will catch the light and be distracting. – Bring extra powder to the portrait session to avoid facial shine (nose, chin, forehead).

- Should you purchase multiple images? Consider having different wardrobe and different settings for different purposes. It is helpful to have a range of photos to use for your business. – Website – Social media sites – Conference agendas – Printed ads – Press releases Consider rotating out images with a slightly different pose or look over time Purchase several different images from the same photographer to save money, time, and provide consistency that shows an added measure of professionalism.

- What services should the photographer offer? – Good customer service: prompt replies, good communication skills, personable – Suggestions on setting, wardrobe, lighting, make-up, and posing – Professional quality portrait retouching (ex: removing blemishes, reducing under-eye circles, brightening eyes, whitening teeth, reducing wrinkles)

- What product should the photographer offer? – A professionally retouched image that doesn’t look overdone, minimized distractions, and accurately represents you. – A high resolution digital copy for printed media (ex. 300 dpi: 8×10) – A set of web-ready digital images (ex. 72 dpi: 150 pixel, 300 pixel, 550 pixel)

- Who owns the copyright to the image? The photographer retains the image copyright but grants you permission to use your image for business purposes. Some photographers will charge different usage rates based on its purpose and breadth of distribution that image will have (ex. National ad campaign); other photographers will grant full usage rights to the client as a part of the portrait image fee. You need to ask about usage fees up front. Select a photographer where you can arrange for unlimited use; you want the freedom to broadcast your image widely on the Internet and on printed media as you see fit.

- How much should a business portrait cost? That depends on the skill of your photographer and what you are looking for. On the low end, a 1 hour in-studio session might cost $50-$100 just for the sitting or session fee which does not include the images, digital prints, or the rights to use them.

Portraits in Leadership

Portraits in Leadership

$40.99

Leading complex organizations is never easy or simple. In this book, Padilla uses the university as the organizational vehicle through which to examine the phenomenon of leadership and followership in complex entities. The unique characteristics of universities as organizations are discussed and the leadership experiences of six well-known university presidents are analyzed within an orignal framework of leadership. Just as John Kennedy’s Profiles in Courage considered the notion of political courage within the institutional setting of Congress, this book explores leadership within the context of the modern American university. The roles of persuasion and communication are highlighted as the author weaves the principal patterns from each of the six case studies to the situational conditions that faced these extraordinary individuals. Padilla offers valuable suggestions on how to improve selection of leaders and increase organizational effectiveness. The author’s plan follows three circles that overlap to form its basic framework: 1. The university as a complex organization; 2. Leadership – its patterns, theories, and commonalities; and 3. Case studies of exemplary leaders, which highlight their early experiences and actions. The overlap of the three circles defines the conclusions and synthesis. Each leader’s story covers four areas: Childhood background; formal schooling/education; senior leadership roles and major defining events, successes, and failures; and forecasts for higher education and its leadership. The book includes an assortment of public and private universities, which provides a diversity of leaders who face significant differences in terms of control, financing, and oversight. This diversity allows for more useful comparisons and contrasts. The author explains the enormous role that persuasion (rather than domination or power) plays in successful leadership. It is clear that persuasion is effective in many settings, and not just in the university environment, but it is particularly ef

Working with Chinese Expatriates in Business Negotiations: Portraits, Issues, and Applications

Working with Chinese Expatriates in Business Negotiations: Portraits, Issues, and Applications

$22.24

This is a study of Chinese expatriates who are working for American clients that seek joint ventures and other business relationships with mainland Chinese business and governmental organizations. The main focus of the study is how these Chinese middlemen and women work to create harmonious business relationships between members of the two very different cultures. The data and the interpretations will be of keen interest to any American business seeking to conduct joint ventures and other forms of commerce in China. The research will also be of interest to any Chinese organization seeking to work more effectively with Americans. Dr. Lam explains the problems of U.S. and Chinese negotiators-as perceived by Chinese expatriate middlemen-thus bringing a new depth of understanding. The study shows how Chinese expatriates, acting as middlemen, attempt to establish trust and bridge the cultural differences between U.S. and Chinese negotiators in the pre-negotiation stage as preparation for formal negotiations of joint ventures and cooperative projects. Different types of Chinese expatriates are highlighted and this classification illustrates how each type will act in negotiations and what might hinder them from doing what American clients want or need. A representative of each type is described in detail at the end of each chapter. Finally, Dr. Lam provides training strategies to Chinese expatriates and American negotiators.

Cultural Portraits: A Synoptic Guide

Cultural Portraits: A Synoptic Guide

$3.92

Cultural Portraits has been written for those who work with persons who hail from foreign countries and whose cultures differ from ours. It provides a framework for developing cultural proficiency, thus bridging the culture gap in our changing environment that often results in miscommunication and, often, in ineffective productivity. Would you know that Chang Wu Jang’s last name is Chang, not Jang? Or that handing something to an Arab with your left hand is an insult? Or that, at birth, a Chinese is one year old? Cultural Portraits answers hundreds of questions and empowers you with valuable information not only about cultural practices but with explanations about terms we hear daily (i.e., "jihad," "Sunni"). If you are a school principal, a corporation executive, a registrar, an institutional dietitian, a social worker, an immigration attorney, a policeman, a social security employee, a guidance counselor, a director of personnel in a factory, a professor or a classroom teacher, a foreign student adviser, a business man, or just a tourist traveling around the globe, there is something in Cultural Portraits to help you meet the needs of foreign persons without offending their sensibilities and sparing yourself embarrassment. The more complete and accurate information we have, the better we perform our jobs. In this book, you’ll find brief, succinct information (i.e., caveats, educational systems, recording foreign names, forms of address, gender relations, diets, long and short dates, writing numbers, body language, punctuality, evaluating transcripts, national traits, et al.) which will compose for you the cultural portrait of any one of the 72 countries included in this study.Cultural Portraits is a valuable resource for resolving challenging issues and addressing cultural questions to help you do your job better and with renewed confidence, while fostering understanding for one another in today’s complex world.

Masters of Movement: Portraits of America’s Great Choreographers

$5.43

Where does the impulse to create originate? What is the choreographer’s responsibility to the dancers, the audience, the self? These are just a few of the probing questions that Rose Eichenbaum asks some of America’s most celebrated choreographers in her quest to understand the secrets of creativity. A collection of photographic portraits and vignettes based on intimate conversations, Masters of Movement is a rare journey into the world of dance. Whether through her lens–David Parsons, in a business suit, standing on the branch of a Central Park tree; Ann Halprin lying naked at the base of a giant California redwood–or through the revelations from her thoughtful interviews, Eichenbaum captures the essential character of her subjects, who have confided the experiences and emotions that have driven their creativity and defined their styles.

In what other book of portraiture will you find a model bio that includes "chases rats and pigeons" followed by "loves filet mignon and crA(c)me brAlA(c)e"? Welcome to the dog-centric world of photographer Kim Levin. Nearly a decade ago, Levin began shooting photos of dogs (and occasionally cats) in and around Central Park. What began as a dog-loving photographer’s hobby has blossomed into a successful career as a pet portrait artist nonpareil. With nine books of dog photos to her credit and a booming portrait business, Levin has become a virtual Avedon for the pet set. "Pawfiles" is filled with portraits by turns charming, touching, and goofy. Each dog’s mini-portfolio is accompanied by its stats (age, breed, and home) and a short but revealing "about the model" statement. About Oliver, a 2-year-old English bulldog, we learn of a Beanie Baby obsession. Simone, a 7-year-old poodle, is described as "airhead by day and tramp by night," and Max, a 12-year-old border collie, "enjoys butt rubs"Abut, then, who doesn’t? This hard-to-resist book is sure to elicit the same two-part response from all dog lovers: 1) I need this on my coffee table, and 2) My dog should be in the sequel.

The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America

The Missing Class: Portraits of the Near Poor in America

$15.65

Named one of the Best Business Books of 2007 by Library Journal The Missing Class gives voice to the 54 million Americans, including 21 percent of the nation’s children, who are sandwiched between poor and middle class. While government programs help the needy and politicians woo the more fortunate, the "Missing Class" is largely invisible and ignored. Through the experiences of nine families, Katherine Newman and Victor Tan Chen trace the unique problems faced by individuals in this large and growing demographic–the "near poor." The question for the Missing Class is not whether they’re doing better than the truly poor–they are. The question is whether these individuals, on the razor’s edge of subsistence, are safely ensconced in the Missing Class or in danger of losing it all. The Missing Class has much to tell us about whether the American dream still exists for those who are sacrificing daily to achieve it. "In this compassionate and clear-eyed analysis . . . Newman and Chen contribute significantly to the dialogue on America’s widening inequities." –Publishers Weekly "The Missing Class is a call to action to change America." –Senator John Edwards "At last, a focus on people who struggle from month to month with housing, health care and education costs but don’t fit into the government’s comfortingly minimalist definition of poverty. Newman and Chen give us a vivid, close-up, and often moving look at the urban ‘near poor.’ An excellent follow-up to Newman’s essential body of work on America’s economic anxieties." –Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed "Just above the artificial ‘poverty line, ‘ millions of hard-working people struggle invisibly to gain a foothold on the promise of the American Dream. Their raw hardships and persistent hopes, collected in this book of unflinching portraits, ought to sound the alarm for an America grown complacent." –David Shipler, author of The Working Poor: Invisible in America

Faces of Poverty: Portraits of Women and Children on Welfare

Faces of Poverty: Portraits of Women and Children on Welfare

$3.48

Most Americans are insulated from the poor; it’s hard to imagine the challenges of poverty, the daily fears of crime and victimization, the frustration of not being able to provide for a child. Instead, we are often exposed to the rhetoric and hyperbole about the excesses of the American welfare system. These messages color our perception of the welfare problem in the United States and they close the American mind to a full understanding of the complexity of family poverty. But who are these poor families? What do we know about how they arrived in such desperate straits? Is poverty their fate for a lifetime or for only a brief period? In Faces of Poverty, Jill Duerr Berrick answers these questions as she dispels the misconceptions and myths about welfare and the welfare population that have clouded the true picture of poverty in America. Over the course of a year, Berrick spent numerous hours as a participant-observer with five women and their families, documenting their daily activities, thoughts, and fears as they managed the strains of poverty. We meet Ana, Sandy, Rebecca, Darlene, and Cora, all of whom, at some point, have turned to welfare for support. Each represents a wider segment of the welfare population–ranging from Ana (who lost a business, injured her back, and temporarily lost her job, all in a short period of time) to Cora (who was raised in poverty, spent ten years in an abusive relationship, and now struggles to raise six children in a drug-infested neighborhood). And as Berrick documents these women’s experiences, she also debunks many of the myths about welfare: she reveals that welfare is not generous (welfare families remain below the poverty line even with government assistance); that the majority of women on welfare are not long-term welfare dependents; that welfare does not run in families; that "welfare mothers" do not keep having children to increase their payments (women on welfare have, on average, two children); and that almost half of all women on welfare turned to it after a divorce. At a time when welfare has become a hotly debated political issue, Faces of Poverty gives us the facts. The debate surrounding welfare will continue as each of the 50 states struggles to reform their welfare programs, and this debate will turn on the public’s perception of the welfare population. Berrick offers insight into each of the reforms under consideration and starkly demonstrates their implications for poor women and children. She provides a window into these women’s lives, brilliantly portraying their hopes and fears and their struggle to live with dignity.

100 Caterpillars: Portraits from the Tropical Forests of Costa Rica

100 Caterpillars: Portraits from the Tropical Forests of Costa Rica

$22.53

Every bright monarch butterfly or striking luna moth started out in a far subtler form of nature’s mosaic, a humble caterpillar. It is this early stage of life–crafted by natural selection into machines for converting a vast array of plant matter, mostly leaves, into the beautiful adults that have captivated humans for millennia–that this book brings to dazzling light. Unobtrusive as they go about their business, these caterpillars are rarely seen by humans–and are virtually never seen from the perspective presented in this sumptuous volume: photographed in extreme close-ups at a resolution that captures in sharp detail the exquisite colors and features eluding the casual observer. Gathered by biologists Daniel Janzen, Winifred Hallwachs, and Jeffrey Miller in the tropical dry forests, cloud forests, and rain forests of northwestern Costa Rica, over 100 large-format photographs of caterpillars document the dizzying variety of shapes, vivid colors, and cryptic markings among these species. The pictures are accompanied by capsule species accounts–revealing life histories as diverse as their forms–and magnificent images of the adult butterfly or moth. Throughout, the authors convey an intimate sense of these creatures–studied over twenty-five years–by focusing on how their features figure in their behavior and ecology, and on the beauty of nature in this life stage, as well as the nature of that beauty. The story of the caterpillars is also the success story of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste–where the long-term work of Janzen and Hallwachs, and a team of gusaneros (caterpillar collectors and rearers), along with the participation of neighboring farming communities, has deepened understanding of Costa Rica’s Lepidoptera and has brought about advances in restoration ecology of tropical habitats, biodiversity prospecting, biological control of pests, biotechnology, residents’ bioliteracy, and ecotourism development.

Messengers: Portraits of African American Ministers, Evangelists, Gospel Singers, and Other Messengers of the Word

$3.95

Beautifully designed and featuring stunning black-and-white photographs, this moving book will appeal to fans of "Crowns" and to Christians of all denominations and colors who seek a deeper understanding of the meaning and the glories of their faith. David Ritz recently embraced Christianity, and "Messengers "is a tribute to the people who awakened his personal faith and to others, both famous and unknown, whose words–sometimes set to music–have inspired millions of believers. The gifted photographer Nicola Goode contributes glowing portraits of each of them. The messengers are an extraordinarily diverse group: women and men; ministers and musicians; singers and teachers; preachers known throughout the world and preachers known only in their neighborhoods. There are stories and reflections from Bishop Noel Jones (brother of Grace); Harlem’s own Rev. Dr. Calvin Butts; Rev. Peter J. Gomes of Harvard; gospel mega-stars Donnie McClurkin, Kirk Franklin, Marvin Winans, Smokey Norful, and Candi Staton; Christian life coach Dr. Arlene Churn; Dr. Mable John, a Los Angeles evangelist and former backup vocalist for Ray Charles; Chris Burge, a former Wall Street executive salesman who is saving souls in New York City and is also now a well known author; and a Washington, D.C., pastor who also runs a window-washing business. In voices joyful, clear, and strong, these mighty men and women of God convey messages of faith, love, and hope addressed directly to the heart. My Last Supper: 50 Great Chefs and Their Final Meals: Portraits, Interviews, and Recipes

My Last Supper: 50 Great Chefs and Their Final Meals: Portraits, Interviews, and Recipes

$36.13

Annie Leibovitz meets "Heat" in this award-winning photographer’s stunning celebration of world-famous chefs and their final meals. Chefs have been playing the "My Last Supper" game among themselves for decades, if not centuries, but it had always been kept within the profession until now. Melanie Dunea came up with the ingenious idea to ask fifty of the world’s famous chefs to let her in on this insider’s game and tell her what their final meals would be. "My Last Supper" showcases their fascinating answers alongside stunning "Vanity Fair"-style portraits. Their responses are surprising, refreshing, and as distinct from each other as the chefs themselves. The portraits–gorgeous, intimate, and playful–are informed by their answers and reveal the passions and personalities of the most respected names in the business. Lastly, one recipe from each landmark meal is included in the back of the book. With "My Last Supper," Dunea found a way into the typically harried, hidden minds of the people who have turned preparing food into an art. Who wouldn’t want to know where Alain Ducasse would like his supper to be? And who would prepare Daniel Boulud’s final meal? What would Anthony Bourdain’s guest list look like? As the clock ticked, what album would Gordon Ramsay be listening to? And just what would Mario Batali eat for the last time? Featuring: Ferran Adria, Jose Andres, Dan Barber, Lidia Bastianich, Mario Batali, Rick Bayless, Michelle Bernstein, Daniel Boulud, Anthony Bourdain, Scott Conant, Gary Danko, Helene Darroze, Alain Ducasse, Wylie Dufresne, Suzanne Goin, Gabrielle Hamilton, Fergus Henderson, Thomas Keller, Giorgio Locatelli, Masa Kobayashi, Nobu, Jamie Oliver, Jacques Pepin, Gordon Ramsay, Michel Richard, Eric Ripert, Marcus Samuelsson, Charlie Trotter, Jean-Georges Vongerichten and more…

George Washington and the Art of Business

George Washington and the Art of Business

$25.99

George Washington ranks as one of the great military leaders in history. The character traits he exemplified, and the leadership skills he employed, enabled him to defeat what was then the world's most powerful nation. In this marvelous book, Mark McNeilly shows today's managers how they can learn from Washington's career–both his triumphs and setbacks–to succeed as leaders in their chosen field. McNeilly paints vivid portraits of some of the crucial moments in Washington's military career, from the early debacle on Long Island Heights to the masterstroke at Trenton. There Washington, aided by his use of intelligence and disinformation, and by his great fortitude in the face of truly daunting conditions, routed the Hessians. McNeilly uses these stirring military encounters to underscore Washington's managerial genius: to persuade and inspire, to open up the decision-making process, to seize opportunities when they arise, to persevere when setbacks occurred, and to learn from his mistakes. Indeed, the true value of the book lies in McNeilly's brilliant ability to link military and business strategy, revealing that successful corporate leaders must possess many of the same traits that Washington did. Using examples from the NFL, Cadillac, Coke, Samsung, Embraer, IBM and others, McNeilly shows how business leaders can apply Washington's principles for success. Blending colorful military and business history with crystal-clear commentary, George Washington and the Art of Business belongs of the shelves of all executives who want to hone their leadership skills.

Make 'em Laugh: The Funny Business of America

Make ‘em Laugh: The Funny Business of America

$3.69

From the most popular routines and the most ingenious physical shtick to the snappiest wisecracks and the most biting satire of the last century, MAKE ‘EM LAUGH illuminates who we are as a nation by exploring what makes us laugh, and why. Authors Laurence Maslon and Michael Kantor draw on countless sources to chronicle the past century of American comedy and the geniuses who created and performed it-melding biography, American history, and a lotta laughs into an exuberant, important book. Each of the six chapters focuses a different style or archetype of comedy, from the slapstick pratfalls of Buster Keaton and Lucille Ball through the wiseguy put-downs of Groucho Marx and Larry David, to the incendiary bombshells of Mae West and Richard Pryor . And at every turn the significance of these comedians-smashing social boundaries, challenging the definition of good taste, speaking the truth to the powerful-is vividly tangible. MAKE ‘EM LAUGH is more than a compendium of American comic genius; it is a window onto the way comedy both reflects the world and changes it-one laugh at a time. Starting from the groundbreaking PBS series, the authors have gone deeper into the works and lives of America’s great comic artists, with biographical portraits, archival materials, cultural overviews, and rare photos. Brilliantly illustrated, with insights (and jokes) from comedians, writers and producers, along with film, radio, television, and theater historians, MAKE ‘EM LAUGH is an indispensible, definitive book about comedy in America.

Management Innovators: The People and Ideas That Have Shaped Modern Business

Management Innovators: The People and Ideas That Have Shaped Modern Business

$4.95

Here is a who’s who of business, thirty-one profiles of inventors, financiers, organizers, motivators, and gurus–a vivid, informative look at the history of management as seen through the lives of its most influential figures. We meet Eli Whitney, creator of the cotton gin and father of the machine tool industry, who failed to profit from his genius; Thomas Edison, who once vowed he would never invent anything he couldn’t sell; and Andrew Carnegie, who applied the railroad management system to the steel industry, with spectacular results. There are profiles of such railroad giants as James J. Hill and Edward H. Harriman, and colorful portraits of Samuel Morse and Graham Bell, the two men who launched the communications industry in the U.S. The great innovators of management and organization are here as well, including the founders of systematic management, Frederick W. Taylor and Frank and Lillian Gilbreth. There’s an intriguing side-by-side look at William C. Durant, builder of General Motors, a visionary but a weak manager and organizer, and Alfred P. Sloan, who gave GM the structure it needed, and provided the model for all large, multiproduct firms to come. And there are thought-provoking profiles of motivational experts Elton Mayo and Abraham Maslow; quality advocates W. Edwards Deming and Joseph Moses Juran; Taiichi Ohno, inventor of just-in-time manufacturing; and finally, Peter Drucker, the most influential management thinker of our time. This is the distilled essence of management genius, a stimulating and, at times, inspiring look at the pioneers who shaped how we do business today.

Masters of Enterprise: Giants of American Business from John Jacob Astor and J.P. Morgan to Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey

Masters of Enterprise: Giants of American Business from John Jacob Astor and J.P. Morgan to Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey

$24.03

From the early years of fur trading to today’s Silicon Valley empires, America has proved to be an extraordinarily fertile land for the creation of enormous fortunes. Each generation has produced one or two phenomenally successful leaders, often in new industries that caught contemporaries by surprise, and each of these new fortunes reconfirmed the power of fanatically single-minded visionaries. John Jacob Astor and Cornelius Vanderbilt were the first American moguls; John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan were kingpins of the Gilded Age; David Sarnoff, Walt Disney, Ray Kroc, and Sam Walton were masters of mass culture. Today Oprah Winfrey, Andy Grove, and Bill Gates are giants of the Information Age. America has again and again been the land of dizzying mountains of wealth. Here, in a wittily told and deeply insightful history, is a complete set of portraits of America’s greatest generators of wealth. Only such a collective study allows us to appreciate what makes the great entrepreneurs really tick. As H. W. Brands shows, these men and women are driven, they are focused, they deeply identify with the businesses they create, and they possess the charisma necessary to persuade other talented people to join them. They do it partly for the money, but mostly for the thrill of creation. The stories told here — including how Nike got its start as a business-school project for Phil Knight; how Robert Woodruff almost refused to take control of Coca-Cola to spite his father; how Thomas Watson saved himself from prison by rescuing Dayton, Ohio, from a flood; how Jay Gould nearly cornered the gold market; how H. L. Hunt went from gambling at cards to gambling with oil leases — make for a narrative that is always lively and revealing and often astonishing. An observer in 1850, studying John Jacob Astor, would not have predicted the rise of Henry Ford and the auto industry. Nor would a student of Ford in 1950 have anticipated the takeoff of direct marketing that made Mary Kay Ash a trusted guide for millions of American women. Full of surprising insights, written with H. W. Brands’s trademark flair, the stories in Masters of Enterprise are must reading for all students of American business history.

Every bright monarch butterfly or striking luna moth started out in a far subtler form of nature’s mosaic, a humble caterpillar. It is this early stage of life—crafted by natural selection into machines for converting a vast array of plant matter, mostly leaves, into the beautiful adults that have captivated humans for millennia—that this book brings to dazzling light. Unobtrusive as they go about their business, these caterpillars are rarely seen by humans—and are virtually never seen from the perspective presented in this sumptuous volume: photographed in extreme close-ups at a resolution that captures in sharp detail the exquisite colors and features eluding the casual observer.Gathered by biologists Daniel Janzen, Winifred Hallwachs, and Jeffrey Miller in the tropical dry forests, cloud forests, and rain forests of northwestern Costa Rica, over 100 large-format photographs of caterpillars document the dizzying variety of shapes, vivid colors, and cryptic markings among these species. The pictures are accompanied by capsule species accounts—revealing life histories as diverse as their forms—and magnificent images of the adult butterfly or moth. Throughout, the authors convey an intimate sense of these creatures—studied over twenty-five years—by focusing on how their features figure in their behavior and ecology, and on the beauty of nature in this life stage, as well as the nature of that beauty. The story of the caterpillars is also the success story of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste—where the long-term work of Janzen and Hallwachs, and a team of gusaneros (caterpillar collectors and rearers), along with the participation of neighboring farming communities, has deepened understanding of Costa Rica’s Lepidoptera and has brought about advances in restoration ecology of tropical habitats, biodiversity prospecting, biological control of pests, biotechnology, residents’ bioliteracy, and ecotourism dev

The Genealogy and Family History Collection is a unique set of materials that describes the histories and narratives of particular American families. The Collection brings to life pre-1923 books that contain information such as birth, death, marriage, property and migration records of specific families. Many of these families followed interesting migration and movement patterns from Western Europe and beyond to the United States well over 200 years ago. Included in these volumes is information such as last wills and testaments, period photographs of towns, buildings and landscapes, portraits of family members, and descriptions of business interactions. Encompassing such comprehensive and personal information, this collection will appeal to genealogists, family history researchers, as well as descendants and casual historians.
